spacers are mainly for cosmetic looks. they "push out" the wheels towards the fender (for the desired look of having the wheels flushed with the fender) as the decrease the offset.

Here is what an xi with 18" wheels and stock springs looks like ... Most agree that lowering would improve the look.
19" wheels/tires will have a similar overall diameter so the gap should be the same but mine looks more jacked up than ENstig8or's
