How do i find out what Nav i have?

basically i'm trying to get an updated version of my Nav dvd...there are plenty of new roads and restaurants that my 05' nav seems to be outdated.
my buddy has an 08' 335 w/nav that it more udated, if i burn his DVD will it cause any damage to my nav system? will it work properly??
