Help - E60 xi needs new rims, offset and compatibility questions
I'm having a serious dilemma. I have a 2010 E60 535xi Sport Package with the staggered style 124 set-up. I want to upgrade to either the 135 style wheels (18x8 2010 M Sport version) or the 172 wheels (19x8.5 and 19x9.5 staggered 550I M Sport version). I've even considered 19" staggered 135's that some E46 members have used. I understand now that offsets are the key to everything here. Does this mean I need an offset of 35 or higher? Also, does this mean I can't even consider the 550I rims due to the lower offsets? Could I just use the fronts and put them in front and back? If offsets are off, can't I just use spacers? Also, if I go to 19's, can I still use the 245/40 and 275/35 stock set up or do I need to go to 245/35 and 275/30 wheels?
What's more confusing is everywhere I look, offsets seem to be different for the same wheels. Please help and sorry if this has already been discussed. I've found threads but none that touch on 550i wheels going on an xi.
Thanks so much e60 members

Few facts that hopefully will help you:
- RWD E60/61 offsets are lower than AWD E60/60 --> the lower offset means the wheel is pushed out more
- Some wheels are available with different offsets so that they could be used in different cars
- RWD E60/61 wheels will stick out from the wheel wells, and putting spacers will only push them out more
- For example 8" wide wheel with offset 20 will be sitting 25mm more out than 8" wide wheel with offset 45
- The width of the wheel is essential too; 9" wide wheel with offset 45 will sit 13mm more out than 8" wide wheel with offset 45. The 9" wheel will also require 13mm more room from inside.
- Use offset calculators to determine the difference between two wheels; Wheel Offset Calculator

Thanks Antti, so would I be able to install the 550i sport package wheels which have 19x8.5 (18ET) and 19x9.5 wheels (32ET)? The calculator says:
Front:
19MM more inner clearance
Extend an extra 31MM for outer position
Rear:
5MM more inner clearance
Extend an extra 17MM for outer position
I don't mind if the wheel sticks out roughly 2-2 1/2 centimeters for a more aggressive look so long as it doesn't cause rubbing and adheres to the xi setup.
I know the style 135 18" inch wheels will fit because its stock on the 2010 M Sport with a 43 offset.
A little confused, let me know
Thanks for all your help

No ... you already has the answer ... look at the front ET18 ... for xi/AWD you want it to be ET35.
The rear is probably OK with possible rubbing since usually you want it around ET38 ... I'm on ET40 'cuz I'm going to switch my rear tire into 285/30-19 when it's due.
For your reference take a look the pics on this thread => https://5series.net/forums/e60-parts...ew-pics-15597/
the wheel is style 166 but size are the same w/ style 172 the offset slightly different at ET12 front & ET28 rear to compare w/ 172 ... now some people will have no problem with such look ... so if you are OK w/ the protrude pass the fender well look like a 4x4 truck ... go for it ...

What I mean by not minding if the wheels stick out a bit is I don't mind if it sticks out roughly 20-25 MM over my current stock set up so it lines up more closely to the fender, like yours. I guess it's also because I'm not factoring that I'm already adding a extra .5 inch in the wheel. But I definitely don't want it to protrude past the fender like the Civic boys in NY. It's a shame though because I love the style 172's. So just to confirm, if I go for 19's, they need to have roughly a 35-40 ET front and rear?
If not, I'll even go with E90/E92 19" rims because they're offsets seem to suit the x-drive requirements perfectly. Also, I've found style 135 18x8 rims with 43 offsets. This shouldn't be a problem either right? I plan to do this by next month.
Thanks

I think you've got it now.
Using e90 wheels usually works, and those 135s with higher offsets will work as well.
I'm pretty sure 172s would rub and look some kind of the same as those civics you mentioned.

Not to hijack the thread, but what about an inner (strut side) clearance? How much of clearance should there be? Offset calculator does state xxmm less/more clearance on both outer (fender side) and inner (strut side), but how much to maintain?
For instance, going from standard Xi offset of 7.5" et43 to 8.5" et43, it will extend out 13mm to the fender and 13mm less clearance on inner side, per Wheel Offset Calculator. Looking at stock wheel, there are plenty of room to not worry about 13mm extension toward the fender, but it will also extend 13mm on the inner side (strut side). Do we know how much inner (strut side) clearance we have?
