Headlight upgrade/change

My Ride: 2005 530d M Sport, Carbon Black, Black half leather
I want to get new headlights
Basically the ones i have are damaged and not looking to good at all and are completely letting the car down.
The question: Do i have to get exactly the same headlights for it to work... or can i upgrade to something newer.... E.g. LED halo rings? Projector lenses? LCI Style...
Cars 2005 BMW 530d M Sport with Non-LCI Lights
Halogen bulbs
standard bulbs for angel eyes as well. Not the big LED ones
Does NOT have projector lenses

My Ride: 2006 BMW 550i
do some searching, but you can add projector lights and i think even lci lights, but its not going to be cheap. plus the dealer has to program the car for different lights.
