Gents/Gals

I finally did it... I #@%^#@ blew up the audio comming from the OEM system (before OEM AMP)!. Not a good idea about getting an old aftermarket amp from craiglist :-). It appears the aftermarket amp shorted the amp out with one of the audio inputs (comming from the OEM system). A nice barbacure smell came from two parts if I am correct.
One from the CCC or head unit (or close to it) and saw smoke coming out close to the OEM AMP (OEM AMP can't be as it was totally disconnected - whole plug out).

The computer works, navigator, CD, etc. just no audio even if connected back to the OEM AMP or the good/new AMP. The speakers are fine - tested with an IPOD connected into the Aftermarket amp). I think the output stage of the pre-amp went ballistics. Thing is, where is the pre-amp?

Now, in a "normal" car, the problem will be the Head Unit; but in the BMW I don't know if the head unit/CCC is the "concentrator -audio from navigator/BT/Radio/Bells" or there is another box in the chain between the radio and the oem amp.

Any ideas?

The OEM headu unit is available as a replacement $1,400 or in ebay for $200 ~ $500

Note. The Pioneers are fine without raising the seat. Thanks victory for the hint.

The head unit is a CIC

The stealership is telling me the problem is a blown amp and will be replaced for ~$1K (+ labor) . I doubt it as the amp was disconnected from the system when the smoke came to paid a visit.

The dealer is also telling me the OEM AMP must be present all the time, if not, the MOS(?) bus will be open and the car will never go to sleep, causing battery drain.

I think he is full of s.. any ideas?

Sounds like you have the L7 system. Your dealer is right about the MOST bus and the amp but it doesn't have to be present. You can close the MOST bus with a simple MOST adapter while you are making up your mind about what to do.

It was the CIC that was blown. The stealercheap traded it for a new one & programmed it for around $1.7K. Fortunatly, my insureance paid for it!

As my losses were minimal and my knowdledge increase 10th fold, I will try it once more :-).
I visited several local installers (San Diego Area) and most of them are trying to sell me the bit one or another high end interface; it seems they don't understand ($$$$) the HU on the HiFi system outputs analog signals (Front and Rear). The signals can go straight into a diffential amp, totally bypassing the OEM AMP. Now, I'll add some kind of interface to isolate the amps to the HU.. don't want it to happen again! Perhaps the cleansweep

My System:

- MB Quartz at the front (premium)
- Pionner under the searts
- Rears disconnected
- IDV12 at the back
- JL1000 powering the ID
- Interface from HU to aftermarket (hacked an old 325 amp)

Need to buy
- Clean Sweep
- HD 600/4 powering the fronts (slightly high pass)
- HD 600/4 powering the subs (LOW PASS)

Let see how it pans out
Regards,
Francisco
