Searched but didn't find anything specific on this. Reference this diagram HERE. By the looks of it, part no.1- #63127166115 is the housing assembly and outer lens.
It is listed as "Headlight does not include electronic componentry or xenon bulb".
Has anyone dissected a headlight assembly with AKL and tried to swap all electrical components to a new housing?
I can't see why it would not work since they really do not list two different housings, just how much they're stuffed with!
Any input?
BTW- part#63127166115 & 6 (other side) can be purchased for $300.+. Sure beats $1000.+!

I will start this out as I may be wrong and you should contact board member Nomis nehc for further clarification but with that said, I don't see why that wouldn't be possible to sway the electronics for the headlight out but I believe the auto-leveling and turning gets input from sensors throughout the car and without these sensors to feed data to the headlights those components are useless.

I had to replace both headlight housings on my car last year (bi xenon with AHL). You can get brand new Hella housing on amazon for HALF of what BMW wants for them. You will have to swap over your AHL control unit, xenon bulb, ignitor, and ballast. They're all accessible from the bottom of the housing and take all of 5 minutes to swap over. I got both housings shipped to my door for a little over $1300.
You will need to get the correct housings for your car. If you have AHL, you need to get the housings that support AHL.
good luck with the car.

it sounds like you need the 119/120 housings. if you order a different housing, you will get one that does not have provision for the AHL control module, and does not have the stepper motors inside of the housing. there is no way to remove the lens from the housing to access the headlight internals. they are permanently sealed to the housing. if you go for the other set, you'll soon be boxing them up and returning them in exchange for headlight housings that are for bi-xenon cars with AHL.
ask me how I know.

Forgot to add that you are correct in thinking AKL and AHL are the same. 'AKL' is an acronym for 'Adaptive Kurvenlicht', which translates to 'Adaptive Headlights'...AKL=AHL.
