Thank you all for the replies. All good questions. Wish I had an answer. I know I have the Sport Package as confirmed by the option list for the car when it was built. I thought I had the sport steering wheel until I found some pics on the forum. Not sure why this car has this steering wheel. I oly bought the car last month. Any ideas?

Could it be you can't get the heated steering wheel on the sport steering wheel. Could it be a deleted option witht he cold weather package?

I believe that the Sport Steering wheel (Round airbag) being referred to in these posts was not available on US E60s until 2007 for vehicles with the Steptronic or Manual transmission. The round steering wheel was standard (04 - 07) for any E60 with an SMG transimission. That should explain why Hyper_545i's 2004 has the sport package but not the sport steering wheel.

Hi,

I have an E60 530i LCI with SAT. Would it be possible to change the OEM paddles with the M5 and make them working. I love the look and also the oparating way of the M5 better than the E60 OEM. I like up shift with the right paddle and downshift with the left one. Much better than push/pull of the E60 OEM.
Please let me know.
Hi, Marco
I am also an E60 LCI driver .... I have the same question as you about the retrofit the M5 steering wheel with paddle shifter ...
Did you get any answer ????

Thanks

Kent

Ding - we have a winner! Those of us with Steps on the 545i Sport had the not so pretty hex wheel.

I am in the process of trying to do the paddle shift retrofit. I have been in communication with Andy545 and my530i and it seems that the wheel I have should work. I cannot find the exact part number to identify it though. I think I need to establish the part number of my wheel to let Fred (my530i) know which slip ring kit I will be needing. My wheel looks identical to that of Andy545's. Both padles push and pull to change up and down. I have fitted the wheel to my car and all the multifunction buttons work okay. My car is an October 2005 build date 535d SE (E61). Here are some photos of the wheel.

There are some barcode numbers on the inside of the steering wheel which don't seem to correspond to any BMW part number so I am unable to identify exactly which wheel it is.

There is one sticker with 2 barcodes and the following numbers on it:

FG-Nr. SLCX4616601W
Order Nr. 93530771

AID 07B302AA0037T

There is also one smaller sticker with one barcode on it and the following numbers:
803440. This smaller sticker is actually stuck on the silver trim so could relate to that piece only.

The trim on the steering wheel is a lot shinier than the Ruthenium trim on my car, so the wheel could be the later 'Perglanz Chrome' if that's what it's called.

Does anyone know if the paddles on this wheel will work with my car if I get the slip ring kit from Fred.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Isn't this a steering wheel from the LCI sports step ? Is the airbag the same as the post 09/05 E60's ? This is the crucial question imo.

I'm not sure about it being LCI or not, but I have a 2006 airbag which fits perfectly and the airbag plug fits into my existing slip ring. The steering wheel multifunction buttons all work fine too.

OK, so I changed my mind and bought an M5 wheel, and ordered Fred's slip ring kit. Fitted it all up and it all works perfectly! Excellent job Fred, and the DVD video instructions were excellent too. Recommended mod for anyone!
