HAMANN Quad Exhaust Upgrade
#1
Thought that I share some recent shots of my 550 with its newest upgrade ? a HAMANN Qaud Muffler with 90mm dual tips & HAMANN rear integrated Diffuser. Thanks to ats77, I was able to acquire this assembly directly from HAMANN a couple of weeks ago. After overcoming a series of matters relating with importation of parts/ US Customs / severe lack of HAMANN Instructions/ Missing clamps, etc, etc., finally this modification came to completion a few days ago with special thanks & help from Joe Bachman of HP Racing in Baltimore.
The car simply sounds A W S O M E. I never thought that it would make that much of a difference in the performance and actual feeling of driving a 550, but there is no match of HAMANN's elegant low bass coming from the rear - to match with the raw power of BMWs V8 motor. I am simply loving it.
This modification looks a whole lot simpler that it actually is. After more than a decade of tinkering with a series of BMW projects, this project, in my opinion is close to a 9.0 on a scale of 10 of difficulty & intense involvement. If anyone wants to pursue this modification, I was will be glad to share my experience and tips/ short cuts to make their life easier [I have tons of pictures of the process but don't want to bore everyone with those at this moment] At the end of the day, I am happy how this whole project turned out & thought it is time to share with you all.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
Looks fine, but I wondered what you meant by performance enhancement? How about mileage and cat operation etc?
Also, I may have missed the early chapters, but what was the purpose of self-importing?
I began my BMW (car) career while at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, in 1971...
Somewhere on the Bay, near Aberdeen.
Cheers,
Ray Hull

I located an earlier Image of the car prior of this modification - almost from the same angle - please view the middle image - thought it makes for an interesting comparison.
I will post some sound clips as soon as I get some time available in coming days.
The performance is just G R E A T - It certainly feels more powerful without any loss of low-end-torque what-so-ever. There is is no noticable difference in milage at all as it is giving me the very exact milage read-out in last couple of tanks, as before. The reason for personal import was a direct purchase from HAMANN through ats77 from the message board - and furthermore, this exhaust is also presently Not available through HAMANN USA. In my conversation with them a couple of months back, they grudgingly offered to do this import as I insisted - at almost twice the price - making my decision very simple to go along with facilitation as provided by ats77 ? directly from HAMANN. anyway....
