Getting my exhaust tips made black
I found a local place that have done this a few times and they said drop the car off and leave it with us all day. I'd rather just turn up and say take them off and I'll come back. Are they just held in place with a screw or two underneath? Or are they welded in place? It's far too cold and dark to be going outside to have a look right now

the stock exhaust tips are not welded in. they are held in by pressure. If you have the shop hit the back of the tips with a rubber mallet they will come off easily.
Great to know. The shop doing it won't necessarily know that, and if I had gone out and looked underneath I wouldn't have known either.

honestly you can do the same thing yourself with high heat engine paint
much cheaper with the exact same look

I am amazed how well the paint has held! I have had to SCRAPE the dirt off couple of times while washing the car and no signs off peeling.

ya its really all in the prep time
you did it perfectly off my and others instructions and you got a great result
I've tried doing-it-myself with paint mods when I did my own shadowline. It looked good for the first few weeks and garnered "good job" comments on here when I posted the pics, but it all started flaking off in little bits just as I was warned it would. I ended up going to BMW and asking them to shadowline me.
I've been quoted less than $100 to have the tips done and I know they'll be done properly. I don't have to worry about whether they're prepared properly, left for the right amount of time, using the right paint etc etc. Plus it's close to freezing temps here now so I don't fancy spending a lot of time in the garage trying to catch a cold.
The way I figure it now is that if someone who's paid less than half what I am is offering to (professionally) do something for me and they can do it in half the time I'd do it, then it would be foolish not to accept. To put that into an example, if you earn $100 an hour and it takes you two hours to mow your lawn, and someone comes along and says I'm a professional gardener and I'll do your lawn for $50, you'd have to really like doing it to not take that offer.

I LOVE THIS CAR!!!
(WAAAAAYYYYY better than my previous MB E350, but quite a bit more expensive :( )
Seriously though, it's not that much of a pain. I was able to pull my tips off by hand, by just gently twisting in both directions and pulling. Once on they, fit very snug, so no worries, just make sure you push them all the way back.
About the the painting, it is sooooooo much cheaper just to do it yourself. Check out my latest thread, and you'll see a before and after picture....I think you should just do it yourself with high heat engine paint, as others have suggested....
+1 to those who suggested the same
