Fuel grades

Why is it in the UK, we are tripping over 99 Ron / octane grade Petrol fuel, but reading this forum seems most in the US are either having access to low grade or 93 octane? I am just interested to see why this is the case? As it's not like we have loads of fuel companies, and the higher octane gives a cleaner burn etc, so why are other countries behind? just interested to see why someone has not written to companies like shell requesting clarification for example, I mean we even have higher grade diesel, or is it the case it's is the same fuel just classed as a lower fuel rating? as I read one Internet page that said vpower in the US was classed as 93 AKI which in fact is 96-98 RON this would mean in the US it's pretty much the same as the UK so perhaps the fuel is not such low grade as most of us think?

I switch between 89 and 91. I don't see a difference in performance or mpg. When I push my car hard or drive in extreme heat I'll run 91.
Always put 91 in anything turbo'd or super charged and in my motorcycle which has pretty high compression. I ran 87 in my bike once and it ran AWFUL. Never never again
