1. When people say HID (High Intensity Discharge), they're usually referring to real HID lighting that usually includes ballasts, ignitors and real xenon bulbs (bulbs filled with xenon gas which are ignited providing high intensity lighting at lower wattage compared to regular halogen bulbs). PIAA is a manufacturer that makes real HID bulbs (PIAA Super Cobalt) as well as xenon-look bulbs (the latter is what most people are referring to on this forum).
2. Real HID bulbs are usually 2-3 times more than xenon-look bulbs. Some even more dependingon brand. For Example, you can get PIAA xenon-look bulbs for about $75 a set but their Super Cobalt HID bulbs are about $380 a set. Some examples of other xenon-look bulb manufacturers include Xenesis Tru-Match and the Sylvania Silverstars. Some examples of real HID manufacturers are Philips Ultinon and Hella. Actually some manufacturers make both types.
2a. I had to make this a separate point. If you're considering switching your foglights to real HIDs, you can't just buy HID bulbs because the factory bulbs are wired for halogen lighting. You'll have to buy a complete HID conversion kit which includes ballasts, ignitors and HID bulbs. You can find some conversion kits for around $280 or even as high as $800.
3. It seems like most people use 4150K, 4300K, or 4700K. Supposedly, the higher the kelvin temperature, the more blue or purple the lighting gets. However, the higher you go, the less light output (measured in lumens) you get. I believe 5500K-6000K has the most output. Going higher will get you more bluish or purplish lighting but it'll be less bright. I believe the stock xenon lowbeams are around 4200K-4300K and the AngiliBrights are about 5000K (not sure on this one, you should check with Custom Angel Eyes).
4. I would just look on eBay.
Hope that helps.

See... I saw that EuroCarFan was viewing this thread at the same time I was. I enticed him to post his knowledge of fog lights b/c he even commented he wasn't going to say anything. Well, that wasn't going to happen. Share the wisdom, oh wise Modder!

Gents - I just got this email tonight from Dave over at CustomAngelEyes(AngeliBright)...
Check it...
Thankyou for your interest. Here are your answers:
1. Do you offer any discounts for E60.net forum members?
Yes, $10 off your order, plus if your preorder for the 2.0 version, it is only $319.(so $309 for you)(price will rise in a few weeks when they ship)
Features of the 2.0 version (compared to the 1.0 version):
200%(2x) brighter than the already brightest on the market 1.0 version.
2x better life (approx. 100,000 hours).
Better color matching technology to OEM Xenon headlights.
NO AM/FM radio reception interference issues(all other competitors cause interference)
NO Blinking/Flashing issues on any model BMW (all other competitors cause some type of blinking, flashing, or strobe effect).
Much easier to install due to an ergonomic fitment to hand (unlike any competitor).
NO On-Board Computer(OBC)/dash errors (unlike some competitors on some vehicles)
REAL Plug & Play Connectors for every model, NO TAPPING OF ANY WIRES, OEM connector (from vehicle) simply plugs right into the Angel iBright 2.0 base. Direct instant connection.
Complete microprocessor controlled ballast system internal to the unit (opposed to the Angel iBright 1.0 external ballast, with lose wires). Ballast controls and maintains proper electrical conditions for the Angel iBright at all times.
Solid CNC aluminum body that will not corrode or rust.
One piece construction with no external parts, electronic components or wires.
Available in 3 different colors of light: ?Xenon Match? White, Blue or Red. Other colors can be custom ordered.
100% of the components are manufactured right here in the USA.
Which fogs do you recommend to accompany the new halos? I was thinking of PIAA, but not sure which model/strength...
We are not a fan of anything PIAA, they are usually built cheaply and very expensive....some of our customers have had good luck with HEON xenon-match fog lights. Plus they are only about $30.
Check it...
