Is this a fair price for an iPod adapter and install?

At the same dealership, the north store quoted me $700 and the south store quoted me $500 for ipod adapter and installation.
I paid 700 in JAX FLA. but def worth it. I would use the gateway eventhough i don't know much about it. I don't like having to butcher my music library ie. genres and playlist to fit everything into 500 songs per folder. it sucks! but you still get the thousands of songs you just have to work for it

Tech just called said it is finished and working great with all my previous things like bluetooth and voice prompts still intact (great deal) 50.00 for the upgrade wich is 30 min of shop work.
He is also going to bring the car down a little more for me and align it for me 100.00 so I think I came out great, he even installed the adaptor in the glove box.
My Bmw mechanic is great I follow him from shop to shop

$239.96 for the iPod kit from Garry at BMW of Newport and $175 for install and programing. $414.96 is that a good price?
Just so you know I don't currently have a CD changer or Nav and my car does not play mp3's so I would definitely need the programing. I was hoping maybe if I installed it myself I could just take it to a dealer and say that it didn't work and they would do the update for free. That way I could save myself $175. If that were possible I would do it.
It's hard for me to justify the $400 just to play my iPod. As most of you know I don't have a problem spending money on mods for my car. I just think $400 for just this function is a bit ridiculous. What do you guys think?

Look around for the GW500, I paid only about 350 for mine from a guy called Val on this forum. But I sold it, since my car didn't have the MP3 capability. As for installation, if you're handy, you can do it yourself for free. No programming needed if you have MP3 capability already. PLUS you get to keep your CD changer.

The key to successful (with TEXT) GW500 installation is not MP3 capability, but the retrofit of BMW's ipod module. BMW's hardware is not necessary since diagnostic computer will detect GW500 as ipod module and program your car to enable ipod functionality.
How sure are you about this? The Gateway 500 emulates a CD changer and absolutely will not work in a BMW unless there is a CD changer present. (Or the car thinks a changer is present by programming and then removing the CD changer)
