I like the "German Castrol" 0W-30 for the 3.0L N52B30 engine in my '06 E61. Here's a link to BMW's list of approved oils for gasoline engines.

i use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0W-40 (it says european car formula on the bottle). it's approved by BMW. i made the mistake of thinking that all 5W-30 is the same, and i put mobil 1 5w-30 in there at first. it was very sluggish, and, after about 100 miles, i checked online and found the error of my ways. i changed it with 0W-40 and won't look back, noticeably smoother and rev-happy.

'BMW Oil' or a recommended "equivalent" of the proper viscosity.

A few questions: (1) How much oil is consumed ["burned"] over how many miles? (2) How many miles on your 550, and (3) what are your driving habits/style?

That's not bad at all - especially if you do any spirited highway driving!

US spec oils differ from EU oils. The poster above is right, the 5w-30 is not the same spec in US as the EU 5w-30. You can look for 5w-30 European Formula on a 5w-30 or you can use the 0w-40. Or you can just pick up the OEM oil from your local dealer. it is not usually more expensive than the above oil.
