I'm not considering a supercharger at this time but I've always wondered how much improvement one would provide.

 

Very interesting mode, is always on my mind. But I don't think that I'll decide it.
I've found one more with much more gain at power and torque.
Consumption and engine breakdown on the other hand, with the gas prices up and up :thumbsdown:
I think remapping is a better solution, but the gain is only 15-20 hp at this engine class.

Not much power gain considering the horrible things it will do for your consumption.

Manufacturers are going away from blowers as they use too much power.

 

Considering the price of superchargers its probably best to trade the car in for a used 545i

 

Not AMG it seems - their latest blown engines are pretty spectacular.

 

Or an Alpina B5! 534bhp/519lb/ft 4.4l V8 22.5mpg with a nautilus supercharger.

 

I didn't read the links, but a supercharger would provide significant gains even at a safe boost level. Parasitic losses from superchargers are minimal, and gas consumption depends primarily on the driver--not whether a car is supercharged. In general, I prefer aftermarket superchargers to afermarket turbos, but both can be very good systems. Also, in gereral, I prefer OEM supercharges to turbos, although some OEM turbos are excellent, including little turbo lag. Unless the manufacturer is as good as Alpina, I would be concerned about someone supercharging a valvetronic engine. I think getting it all right, including engine management, etc., would be very difficult. I certainly wouldn't be the first kid on the block to supercharge a 545i.
