Can't say for sure why but maybe it has something to do with the poor road conditions here and the way people drive? I don't think people over here are as worried about dust -- I think it's about small stones, etc. that chip the paint.

Over here, people tailgate or follow closer than they should, etc. and the roads are often full of debris, especially as you approach the shoulder.

If the same is true in Europe, then I can't offer any better explanation...

2. If I could find clear bra in Europe, I for one would get it. ( chips.... )

or perhaps you guys and gals just worry more about the car's appeal. (which is opposite to the bad looking mudflaps)

Mudflaps are one exterior add-on that are not intended for purely cosmetic value. No matter how ugly a car design is, it will always looks better when clean and an in-tact paint job. The underside of the rear quarterpanels are not safe from the dirt thrown up from wide tires. The fronts are OK so I installed rear mudflaps only. There is little cosmetic change and it is distinctive since few people bother to add the flaps.
