Usually, those can be hacked. It's illegal in the US to play a DVD in the front seat while moving. But I think it's fine if you're parked and waiting or something.

But I thought there was just some block on there preventing it in the US. The Nav is DVD based, so this should work when someone figures it out.

 

AFAIK it won't be possible.

The front Nav-DVD bay is only used for navigation. If you want to watch DVD you will need the TV Tuner, which supplies the AUX input and a DVD changer (located in the trunk) that will play the DVD and redirect the output to the TV tuner.

So IMHO there is no way that the front DVD player will ever be able to play DVD movies, it is just no designed to do this. Only future will tell I guess.

 

I disagree. Why would you need a TV tuner to play a DVD? We're not talking about watching an on air broadcast of TV. The Nav plays that DVD, so it seems logical that a regular DVD would also play when the block is hacked. Just my opinion based on logic. Other Navs have been hacked for this purpose. Although, we'd probably need a software upgrade, which may not be possible in the U.S.

 

I hope you are right, but I won't get my hopes up too high.

 

NavTv Works. I talked to the guy there at there office in New York. He said if the one he had doesn't wok that they will be making one asap to do it. And yes, it will bypass the block allowing you to watch a movie while you drive.

 

ya navtv.com and tvonnav.com both are great. they make it so that any bmw with a woman voice nav can play dvds while driveing but tvonnav.com also lets you use your steering controls too and it is cheaper. the only problem is that nether of them have got their systems to work on the new 7 or the e60. i have talked to both companies and they said they were on it .

I bet the Idrive is making thier work on the system a lot more complicated.

 

I guess that the new data bus used in the 7 Series is responsible for their delays. The 7 Series uses the MOST bus, which is more or less a standard used in most new high end cars. Like the 7 & 5 Series from BMW but also Porsche, Mercedes etc are all using the same data bus in their cars now. Now this might sound great, one data for all cars, but in real life it is more or less the opposite because each manufacturer must approve your device before they will allow you to use it in their cars! So I am pretty sure that this is the reason why there is a lack of aftermarket devices that are able to communicate with the stock systems.
