First, I'd like to thank the members for posting the short shifter install. I was able to do it from inside the car..reminded me of the game 'Operation'!!

Got the parts from Garry..short shifter and m knob....got the lever out then compared it to the new one and...Damn it that they were the same. I compared the lengths and part number and they indeed matched. The question is whether the sport package included the short shifter. Had I known, it would have saved me about 45minutes of surgical precision work . The car was a lease return, so I doubt that the original owner modded it.

If anyone wants to do it from the top ...get a bunch of circlips!!

Anyway.I'm pleased with the result. The shorter heavier knob makes a big difference...about 25% shorter throws.

the 373 shifter was phased into production, according to bmwfans on 3/05. My 10/04 build 545 did *not* have it. the 373 is the same length below the ball as the older shifter, it's only shorter on the top side. my 678 shifter is on its way, I'll report back when I get it.

WEll gosh darn it...well at least i can say i did it! Keep us informed about the 678. I devised a method forthe circlip install...use a long screwdriver and stick it in between the back portion of the clip. Then let it engage the shift linkage, then use another screwdriver to push the clip on comppletely..worked like a charm.

alas, the 678 shifter is practically identical to the 373. it took me even less to swap them this time around- the circlip snapped back into place on the first try. I couldn't believe it! didn't lose a one!
