Just wondering how people like this setup? I plan to eventually add a JB+ or JB3 (PnP)....I will be running a magnaflow muffler in the rear....until I have enough for the RPi exhaust...

I have an 09 535xi

Edit: What kind of HP gains do you think I would get with this setup?

I had the bms dual cone air intakes to go with my jb3 but I ended up changing back to the stock box. With the bms dcis I was getting too many limp codes during the warmer days. When i switched back to the stock box configuration, i harldy ever got them under normal driving conditions. Just get the RPI scoops and helene or bmc drop ins.

If you haven't been reading up on regarding open air intakes, you end up loosing hp due high heat temps in the engine bay. During a dyno with the DCIs, the temps next to the air intakes were measured @ aproximately 180-190 degrees F. Then the temps were taken with the stock box and the air temps were at 75 degrees F.

There's a reason why ALL high performance cars, including BMWs, Ferraris, Lambos, and Porsche's all come with a plastic box air intake. If the open air intakes were all that the aftermarket manufacturers claimed to be, why wouldn't they already come with them? Check out this site for more info.

The best performing intake is the drop in bmc filter with the rpi scoops. you will gain about 5-7 hp with that setup. You will loose hp with all others.

Stick with the stock intake. A dual cone is prone to heat absorption. You want cold air not warm. Dual cone = FAIL. Save your money.

Yea I've been kind of reading about the heat stuff, but I figured I could counter the heat issue by using the Scoop...could anyone clarify what this thread means? I don't really know how to read these types of graphs but I feel like these are relavant...

Obviously its coming from the person who is selling the intakes

the graphs on the data show that the temps are the same with both the dci and the stock intake but what it doens't show is how much time was taken between the runs. If you let the car completely cool down and do one to two runs, any open air intake you will get similar results. It's when you do run after run, there will be a loss of hp due to high temps. It seems funny to me why a dyno wasn't done instead of just showing the temperature only. A dyno would should the exact amount of power loss/gain. There have been plenty of dynos done proving that dcis and cais result in a loss of power.

^^^ thank you very much for clarifying that. One more question though. Wouldn't the RPi scoop continuously be pushing in cold air (relatively) which would cool the ambient air inside the hood? Or would the heat from the engine overpower that?

the rpi scoops have a ramming effect which pushes the outside air inwards. but if you have a cone intake the high engine temps will cancel the ramming effect. In order to truly have maximum potential from the scoops you should put the stock box back on. Most people like the sound you get from the cone intakes, but in my opinion, I would rather gain performance over aesthetics. The 'whoosh' sound you hear when the turbos spool are cool but I wouldn't sacrifice sound for horse power. if you really wanted to hear some noise, get a blow off valve. In my opinion you should put the stock box on w/rpi scoops and bmc drop-ins.

I dont see how there is so much interest made about the intake temp on the 535, you all realize that the intake flow is pushed thru a 200+degree turbo where its instantly heated, the only way to change the charged air temp is through use of an FMIC to cool it. Air temp before the turbo is irrelevant.
