do plug & play chip boxes work?

thinking about getting a "plug & play chip tuning box off ebay (circa ?80)
do these work (2005 530d)
or should i go for a "full" rolling road tune at around ?300-500

any advise is welcome

I have a tunit box on my 525d - really good. - improved bhp from 170 to 210. - much better acceleration - surprisingly a marginal improvement in consumption due to not having to have such a heavy right foot! Also completely reversible should you wish to. I'd recommendit

ps my tunit box cost just under ?300 Don't know what the ebay boxes are like though I've heard that some of them are little more than a resistor on a wire!
