Yup, I think you need performance tires to be happy. I do NOT think you need runflats, as long as you have a donut. They are overly hard and are probabaly destroying our suspension and body integrity as we speak/drive.

You have correctly stated the high-end price bracket, (Michelin and Goodyear--be careful of Goodyear, and read the reviews) but I would urge you to look at second-tier manufacturers, such as Continental, and Dunlop non-RFs--both of which have been featuerd by BMW as OEM tires. I really liked the Dunlop SP 2000s that came on my 540iS; they were very tight handling, lasted about 25K miles and were extremely quiet. My only grouse with them was tricky wet handling (worthless in snow), and lack of supply in the US when I needed a new set. Because of that, I went with the early Michelin Pilots.

In short, I don't think you need to get down into the Asian ranks to save money, Tire Rack and Discount Tire Direct http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/home.do run specials on the mid-level brands and you can pick up deals (also try your local dealers).

Cheers,
Ray Hull
Could you point me towards the bad reviews on these particular goodyears. From glancing on the reviews on tirerack, most of them seem to be postive.

I found the car and driver tire review helpful
http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?se...rticle_id=10252 , but the thing is, I have the bridgestone RE050As on another car and am quite pleased with them. Though in the test, they finished near the bottom. Also, the kumho mx finished dead last, but I've had the chance to drive on them previously and thought they were pretty decent. I'd like to say I'm all about performance, but perhaps I'm easy to please.

Also, some of the tire brands I've mentioned may have asian origins, but for myself, I wouldn't have any qualms about putting them on a german automobile. The reasons I've considered them, other than price, is that they have gotten decent reviews on various forums such as the m3forums and some porsche forums. The PS2s and the F1 GS-D3s may be at the top, but all the rest are still in the ultra high performance tire category.

Anyways, I'm leaning towards the PS2s or the goodyears. The PS2 are about $1100 shipped through tirerack, while the goodyears are about $100 less. I would of ordered already, but I'm really picky so I'll just make up my mind tomorrow. The T1Rs can be had for $800 shipped. I'd prefer to save a little money, but $300 dollars doesn't like a big deal in the scheme of things.

I was going to go with PS2's, but they where not available in the rear tire size I wanted, so I put on the Continental Contact Sport 2's. Which have gotten very high marks and they where almost $400 cheaper than the PS2's in the tire size I was looking at. So far I have been very happy with them.

At the upper end, I'm thinking about the Michelin PS2s or Goodyear F1 GS-D3s. But at a savings of $300-400, I might go with some toyo T1Rs, falken 451s, yoko es100s or maybe some fuzion ZRis.
I think it would be a huge mistake to think that ANY of the replacement tires would be an improvement over the standard Dunlop RFTs. They are superb when new, and in my case at least have continued to be excellent at the 12,000 mile mark.

Have you tried non-RFs? The difference is marked...

Here's a consumer reports review/recommendation. A bit dated though ~2004

Ended up ordering the PS2s last night. The car and driver article was informative, but I'm mainly interested in dry performance, so the results did not agree with me. The online article lacked the graphs and raw data which I'm sure can be found in the actual magazine.

Even though car and driver ranked the GS-D3s first in their test, they seemed to have discerning remarks regarding the tire on their long term evo. http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?se...0&page_number=4

Would of liked to try the ADVANs, but they don't have an offering in the stock sizes.

I went through tirerack. Costco was slightly more, but everything is included in their price such as mounting and the rest. If not through tirerack, I would of gone through them.
