Hi,

I spoke with DMS Automotive this morning about a remap for the 520d. The figures they detailed, both performance and cost, seemed very good. I understand that the remap is 'undetectable' to the BMW service tecnician and understand that any upgrade of the engine mgt system by BMW is covered under the DMS warranty. All seems fine but what have you guys with remaps done about Insurance?

I dont want to be in a situation where I have a crash and they wont pay out because of an undisclosed mod. However I am reluctant to phone for a quote as I suspect they will 'red flag' my account even If I don't go ahead with the remap. Currently with Norwich union for cover and dont mind moving insurers. I'm 30 and paying ?590 a year for business use and upto 25,000 miles p.a.

Seen a few other threads similar to this but the answers were a little 'vague' so any opinions or suggestions on insurers or even ways to get them to cover would be appreciated. I suspect most are now aware of the increase in stats but hp goes from 163 to 208 and torque from 340 to 406 so a big increase for this engine.

OR did you simply forget to mention the remap to the insurer?

it's a reasonably popular topic, so more searching will be fruitful. I just picked up the two most recent long-ish threads

Thanks dlevi67, ran a couple of searches but didnt catch them. Thanks again.

EDIT: For anyone interested I just rang BMW Insurance. Quote at Stock is ?675 with a ?400 excess. With the DMS upgrade it's ?950 and ?600 excess. Not excessive but an increase of 28% in hp adds a few ???'s. Will give this some thought but may run it as is for a while longer.

EDIT 2: Noel Dazely just quoted ?675 protected with remap, now I'm tempted!

You could also call the A-Plan office in Epsom and speak to Michael Papageorgis. They also have a few mod friendly insurers. 01372 720200

I told them it was between 11-20% increase, this meant the increase was not as drastic, and it would be very hard to prove otherwise.
