My Ride: 2004 545i - 6 speed manual (July 04 build), silver-grey/black, sports package std equipment (18", active roll, active steering, adaptive headlights), premium sound, bluetooth enabled, folding rear seat, lumbar, 3m hood/bumper protective film, rear tint, euro reflectors.

From the guys who have made the plunge for the Dinan CAI:

It does not sound like there is an abnoxious noise increase to the system. Can you describe it?

Do you hear it under normal acceleration, or heavy acceleration, or just during wide open throttle?

Do you think the HP/Torque gains of the CAI and throttle are worth it?

Thanks.

I was thinking of getting it, but I don't know about the noise level and when. For $1300+tax installed and 17 horses, I think it's OK ($76/hp). I don't know how much 17 hp will make a difference.

I'm also not convinced I'd notice 17 HP or 14 lb/ft of torque--but it might make the car sound faster! Or you could use this:
exhaust mod

I recently had the Dinan CAI installed and I really can't hear the noise from the intake kit. However, it could be drowned out by my eisenmann exhaust. As for the HP/Torque gain I do feel a lot better throttle response. I wouldn't know if there's a claimed 17HP but I think having a full catback exhaust plus the Dinan throttlebody and the Dinan CAI, you'll get a good amount of HP & Torque gain. Probably would be able to keep up with the 550i.

Not sure what you mean by automatic trans software.

Auto tranny software can do a variety of things--improve shifting, keep the tranny from shifting manually as redline is approached (which would be good especially if there also is a rev limiter), etc. The first benefit would be enough for me to want shifting software if somewhat reasonably priced--especially if the shift from 1st to 2nd is improved significantly.
