Hi everyone:

I have an 06 M5 with SatNav and CDC. I have the Dension GW500 installed and can currently play MP3 CD in the main CD player but only get non-text MP3s from the Dension (shows up as CDs and Tracks, not the text based MP3 interface). I can't tell if the fact that I can play MP3 CDs in the head unit means that I have the right coding but that the Dension is configured incorrectly or if I need to go back and have the KMP3 option retrofit.

If I have the retrofit:
1) Do I have the dealer keep the Dension switch on (constant blue) and do the retrofit? If so, do I get both Dension text access to MP3s and the use of my CDC, or is there a chance the dealer will remove my ability to use the CDC?
2) Do I have to have them do some other upgrade?
3) What is the difference between retrofit coding the KMP3 option and just 'enabling the interface' as though the factory iPod adapter was installed?

Thanks for all your help -- I have had the car into the dealer 3 times already and still can't fix this. It's going in for service in a few days and I want to get it right this final time.

Not sure what you mean by non text mp3 interface, Are you saying your not getting any artist and song titles?

Did you have your car programmed to have the OEM bmw ipod adapter? As far as I know the only programming that is required is the bmw ipod adapter.

Do you have the switches on the Dension set to 1,2 up and 3,4,5,6 down?

+1, if you can play MP3s on your CCC then you're good to go as far as coding, but double-check the dip switches on the dension. you are using the correct source, too? there's ipod-gw and ipod-ui. one is for using the ipod controls directly, the other is for using the i-drive to control it. i don't remember which is which, i use the i-drive controls and don't change the mode.

While a track is playing try:

1. Click I_drive to bring up track options
2. Scroll down to and tick 'Details' (or something like this, I'm not with my car so don't know definitely)

This should show up the album and track names.

Hope this helps

06 with CDC should not need any programming unless for some reason your car did not have the MP3 software ( standard in most 03/05+ cars ). If the controls on the iPod still work when plugged in then you might be in iPod UI mode instead of iPod GW mode in the source menu. Maybe check the dip switch settings to be sure your in BMW text mode, not regular BMW mode? Hope this helps.

Thanks for the pointers so far. I have checked and when selecting a source (CD) and going over to one of the CDx selections (after DVD, CD, CD1, CD2, etc), if I select the track using i-drive there is no details option (or anything similar). So I only see Track X listed. If i put a cd with mp3s into the head unit I do see track info.

I will check the dip switches this weekend. Thanks,

Sorry, by that I mean I can play an mp3 on a CD in the head unit and see the title of the track in text.

Update - it looks like I cannot play the same CD with MP3s from the CDC. Looks like I need to confirm dip switches and then send it back for recoding...

Just to be clear, when we are talking about the MP3 or "text" we are not talking about the basic CD track names that show up at the bottom of the screen. My 01/04 could display track names on most CDs but that what we are talking about. The MP3 activation is a software program that allows the radio to browse the root file folders of the MP3 cd, display them, and allow you select the folder and see the contents and select the songs using the onscreen menu.

I think I understand. I burned a cd of mp3s as files (eg my old stereo cd players can't play them) and this CD will play in the head unit but comes up as unreadable in the CDC. Doesn that mean that the head unit can read mp3s but the CDC cannot? I don't nderstand if that means the computer is programmer properly or not or if there is something else wrong. Any thoughts?

Thanks, A
