I wouldn't take any drinks into my car.
I like my coffee in the morning before heading to the office and my car is manual so without the cupholder it gets a little tough to shift/steer.

Cup holders are "essential" and it shouldn't be an option. I'm glad I have them since I'm always curring water or tea.
