From a link from Nelson's thread on the m5board:
http://www.bmwpassion.com/forum/show...&postcount=117
So the 4 pin connector that connects to the Menu or Menu/VC button(s) is no longer used. However, we need to pull all the wires out of it, because we need the connector itself for the new controller.
So the following wires needs to be moved from the old 8 pin connector that went to the old iDrive controller to the donor 4-pin connector used to connect to the new iDrive controller:
Old - New - Function
1 ---- 1 ---- 12V
2 ---- 2 ---- GND
4 ---- 3 ---- CAN_H
5 ---- 4 ---- CAN_L
The wires that went to pints 3, 6 and 7 on the old controller are not used with the new controller, no are any of the 4 wires that went to the Menu/VC button.
I have not actually done this yet (hopefully I'll be able to try this tomorrow or Wednesday when my new controller shows up), but I'm pretty sure this is what needs to happen to get a new iDrive controller working in an E60 with the old controller (which I think is all models through 2008).

Got my interface cable today and had about a 1 hour session with Patryk.
In about 20 minutes, he had my original iDrive controller working!
Apparently the dealer did upgrade the firmware/software on it, but for some reason, not well enough!
After another 20 minutes, he had my CIC reading CDs and DVDs, and after I checked that everything was working correctly, he programmed my mirrors to fold up when locking the car, and fold down when unlocking. Very cool!
I also have the new iDrive controller, and while the bracket for it does bolt up nicely to my existing console, the controller itself will not work with trim used for the original iDrive controller. I'll post pics in a bit showing the issue.
In short, the CCC to CIC conversion works great in pre-2010 M5s with no need to replace the original iDrive controller!
HUD, M5 button settings, everything works as it should, only much faster and nicer looking than before.
I give a big thumbs up to Patryk in being able to get my controller going where the dealer program update couldn't!
I'll post additional details later tonight. I'm very excited to finally getting the old iDrive controller working. I'm a bit dissapointed that my current trim won't work with the new controller, but I don't really have any issues navigating the CIC with the existing controller at all.
Currently in the process of loading the 2010 North America Nav DVDs.

The new iDrive fitting not so perfectly below my trim:

It better hurry up loading, my next mod is already here!

Congrats Peter!! It's great to see your success. I wonder if the dealer upgrades are even necessay given Patryk's accomplishments with programming. I'm still not able to get my updates done here in TO through the dealer.
Also by the looks of it the cavity from the old controller is larger than the new controller. This is not good news. I've ordered another pre LCI panel that I was planning on mod'ing too. Hmmm, maybe if we want to use the new controller we'll have to buy the LCI shifter trim and ashtray etc.
How did things work out with your climate control module? Did the dealer firmware upgrades fix that or did Patryk??

Are you still considering on going with the new i drive or staying with the old one? How long is the total time involve with the downloading all the necessary firmware/software with Patryk?

My old iDrive is working great with the CIC, so I'll likely stick with it for the forseeable future. I'll need to decide what I want to do with my interior (convert to aluminun or carbon fiber or stay with wood) before making a move.
Depending on the state of the donor CIC, I'd say it would vary depending on what would need to be updated. It only took a few minutes for Patryk to download the software for my controller. This was over a 20Mbps fiber (FTTP) connection, so it would depend. The actual transfer of the binaries is not really what takes the longest. I would say the coding itself accounts for 75% of the total time it takes, maybe more, depending on what issues are encountered.

Congrats again Peter. Glad Patryk was able to sort out all the issues and also glad that you were patient during the whole process.
Regarding the controller, I'm pretty sure there's a way to make it fit, we have the Italian M5board member as an example that it can be done. If for some reason it's not possible I suggest to leave as it is and use the old controller.
@Nigel-
The idea of getting the lci center trim and other lci parts should not be options specially for you guys that have wood trim. Believe it's very expensive and it's totally not worth it.
I been using the old controller for the past month or so and it works fine.

Do you know if Peter got his AC Climate Control working correctly?
