I thought about chipping my car too, but the price is a bit too steep for only 20hp gain. If the chip was cheaper I'd think about doing it, but until that time comes, I'm justing waiting for other engine mods to come out, i.e. cold air-intake from gruppe-m or maybe some pulleys.

Agree w/ choi000! For that kind of performance increase, I'll get a cold air intake + a nice exhaust before think of getting the chip.

Do you know if this chip affect the fuel consumption?

Other than the Powerchip, I also looked at Superchip which was a lot cheaper. Something like $550, but when I went to Eurobahn to see if the Superchip was compatible with the E60, they were not able to crack the ECU. So I couldn't have the chip installed. All this happened over the past summer, so things might have changed and they might have a Superchip that is compatible with the E60. Here's a link to their website if anyone is interested in finding out more. http://www.eurobahn.us

In diesel category it's easier and cheaper: 42hp and 60Nm with 600,-?

And in Germany/central Europa they have chips available almost every corner shop. Of course it's safe to buy it only from shops who have they own rollers to tune the engine.

what are the warranty concerns here? BMW is great a blaming third party add-ons when something breaks...

Of course all your emission related part will have warranty voided if BMW found out. Also, 530i and 525i are currently have a minor emission recall (OBDII status not ready), and dealer need to hook up to OBDII port to communicate with ECU to set OBDII status. If you installed PowerChip or so, and dealer cannot have OBDII status ready because they found out you have powerchip, you might be out of luck. Dealing with ECU is quite risky unless your car already out of warranty.
Increase only 15-20hp and not much for torque improvement are not worth for me to get the Power chip. I need more torque like 25lb-ft+, and more hp like 35hp+.

yeah, i got a powerchip on my e60. Brilliant, no holdbacks anymore. Just now, I'm faced with this emissions upgrade. I'll wait until I get my car serviced to upgrade, and i still have 2 yrs until the CA smog test to renew my reg. I guess I get the update then, and then send the chip back to powerchip to get it reflashed.

Hopefully by that time, I'll be ordering an M5.

Have a look at http://www.kempower.be
Go to Hot news and then to the BMW section and scroll down to the diesel section.
They seem to very knowledgable and can get the 525d up to 250bhp and 500Nm! I have included a dyno printout of this.
I have already had some e-mail discussion with owner of Kempower and he says that the 525d is basically a de-tuned 530d. Everything except the displacement is the same as on a 530d.
If he can give ma written assurance that his chiptuning cannot be detected by the BMW diagnostic system I cam going for it after I have broken in the engine.
