Question

I purchased a set of aftermarket 18" E65 replica rims with Dunlop snow tires for my E60. I just installed them on my previously smooth running 2006 E60 530i. However now the car shakes and vibrates. I took it in for a balancing however the dealer said the problem is that the center wheel ring on the E65 rim is too big for my E60 and that is what is causing all the shaking and vibration. They wouldn't tell me what size spacer ring I would need or where I could find ones. Has anyone experienced this problem?

They are called hub centering rings. I know Tirerack sells them but shipping will cost more than the item. Try a local wheel shop.

did you get the wheels on the net?
you will need to buy 4 hub cantering rings to fit each wheel and they should be the same size.
all 4 wheels on my car have the ring which the shop put in when I installed my ACS 19"
I don't know the size but I try and find out tonight and let you know.

the best thing is just take it to a local shop and get them to add the hub centering rings.

there is no difference in the center bore size on an e60 and an e65. the only odd duckling is the e39 at 74.1mm instead of 72.56mm. OEM E65 wheels will bolt right up with no vibration problems. (unless they're bent, of course...)

Now, replica wheels don't have to conform to anything, so they typically make them to the larger 74.1 and make everyone else get hub rings. one more reason I prefer OEM or wheels like BBS that have centering rings that mount inside the wheel and stay there thanks to a clip, so you don't have to worry every time you take the wheels off the car.

Thanks to all of your replies. I took it to a Firestone shop that specializes in custom rims. His book showed that the 530i was supposed to be 74.1mm for the hub ring but surprisingly found that it was the smaller 72.56mm. He had the wheel centering ring (plastic) in stock and now it runs great. Thanks again for the feedback!

the E39 530i (2001-2003) would have the 74.1mm hub. the E60 has the 72.56mm
