So I got the European stock sound system which totally sucks ass, and there is no way to replace it cause everything is hot-wired into the main on-board computer.

I was thinking of installing a completely separate sound system - maybe into the glove compartment or something.

What do you think could be done about installing a custom sound system?

But ya the E60 can be a pain to work with according to my audio shop. I have all my aftermarket speakers connected through a JL Audio Cleansweep and it sounds great in my opinion. definantly does not sound stock

Nice subs but im sure you get cancellation since the front is not sealed from the back, here is mine so far
i also have 3 way components with CDT gold competition in the front as kickpannels

It all depends on how and what your budget is, i went that route, and im still getting the bugs out, its time consuming and might require modding of the car.
I have tried not to chop the car much but in certain aspects you will have to make some cuts do to size limitations.
