When you stop cleaning them it actually doesn't bother you after awhile. So yes, it does get better in time.

Before you purchase after market brake pads.. remember that your warrenty will void...
My service adviser told me OEM BMW brakes has more dust than other cars, because their brakes are softer

Have you ever tried to get between the spokes on a 116 wheel to clean it? V. difficult!

Now that I've had my car for over 1 year now and have been paying attention to the dust, I've noticed the dirty wheels on other BMWs as well -- X5s, even older 3 series. Funny thing is I never notice it on any other makes. I believe it has gotten better compared to when it was brand new, but like the other poster said, it is a small price to pay for the superior BMW stopping power.
