Ive put in many hours of reading and research into this because I want/wanted to do this mod for my 04, however I never pulled the plug. problem is the pre 09/05 m5 mirrors are hard to find at a good price. More power to you if you go through with the work involved but, from my research I learned that the m5 mirrors are mechanically made up of 2 parts the ecu and the folding motor. the ecu is responsible for the normal mirror functions 4 way movements, dimming heating, tilting ect. and the folding motor is well, self explanatory. Unfortunately in your case the m5 mirror ecu is incompatible with your car. (the post 09/05 e60s ecus were remodeled to receive there commands differently from the kgm module located somewhere behind the glove, where as the pre 09/05 cars got there commands from different modules located in the door.) hence if you look at your m5 mirror it will have 3 wires and if you disassemble your current mirrors they will have 4 wires. In order to make your m5 mirrors work you will need to transplant your old ecus into the m5 mirrors, while leaving the folding motor and corresponding wire intact. Sounds easy right? wrong. The way the ecu is fitted behind the glass of the mirror changes like 3 different times in the era of the e60s existence so even if you are able to transplant your old ecu into the m5 mirrors it will be challenging to secure it into place. Not to say its impossible because i believe bruce and some others have done it, (but i think the other way around) but you definitely need to know what you are doing before you decide to partake in this endeavor. for me it was just too much unsurity to save a few hundred dollars when I'm ready I will just buy the pre 09/05 mirrors and plug and play.
