Hi
I just tried it - twice and it doesnt play dvd - 'medium cannot be read'.
the manual doesnt mention the car has DVD capability, and this is a 4 day old Nov 2006 build car. So, its pretty current!

I have no ideea what DVD you tried to play, but beware, a car with no MP3 activated will say "medium cannot be read". A visit to the dealer, possibly upgrade of software with MP3 enabling (you have to mention this to the dealer specifically), will make your "CD unit" to play MP3 DVDs. Just my two cents.
If the dealers statement of 6 hours for any system 'coding' is required, then I would suspect so. They told me a car dropped off early opening would be programmed by lunchtime!
The MP3 thing - i have a definitive answer from the current BMW sales leaflets.
Big Ipaq - The DVD mp3 i tried to play was a simple one with a dozen songs in the root directory. I note from your car spec you have sat nav and high end stereo - this isnt exactly standard stuff, so is suspect you might think we are all as well equipped MP3 wise, its not the case.
All SE models (poss exception of 550) come with BUSINESS radio. This DOES NOT HAVE MP3 playback. They specifically mention that PROFESSIONAL is available for and extra approx 300 and gives a single CD with MP3 playback and a twin tuner.
Im guessing that DVD MP3 would need sat nav as an option on top of this.
So there it is. a half dozen disks in the bin later, and BMW definitively state no MP3 on baseline cd players.
cheers

This only applies to countries where labor is hella expensive. Over here, Re-programming the car, supposedly a 4 hour job only cost you 20USD, 800 baht...
the 4 hours is programming time, not operator time. Including the fitting of the ipod interface, they quoted 2 hrs - thats 1.25 labour for the programming.
I went to your country on business 2 years ago. Everything is silly cheap. A 50 min taxi fare inc a good tip was approx ?4 ukp - 8 dollars approx. A similar in japan a few years back was over 100 ukp - 180 dollars.
But im working on the 'steve' monetary index, that says connecting a programmer and walking away for a couple hours is charged at approx $300 usd is a rip off.

Seems im the first person to actually try this on this site, that didnt have the 6 cd changer installed first. Even though you have all the wiring, and its a straightforward fitting, iDrive doesnt know if you have the interface or CD unless its 'coded' to do so.
This was kinda expected, as no one on this site seemed to have an answer and hadnt done it before. But im telling you now YOU WILL NEED CODING if you havnt got the cd changer already.

I was charges one hour. And you can *try* and piggy back it on a recall if you have one and you have a nice dealer.
I hav enow been quoted ?110.00 inc taxes - that works out at 1 hr labour, so seems about right.
Apparentlythey stil need to do a complete car reprogram, regardless of the added option. 5 days old cant be that old software!
Only slightly worrying thing - the link you gave referred to one owner getting the BMw message on the ipod, but no idrive item. Im not even getting a connect message. Will investigate further when I get the car programmed on Thursday
cheers all

Final update
got my interface coded by the dealer today, and it works great.
There is one other thing tho....
in order to code it in, the ipod interface has to be disconnected PRIOR to the coding, so all the work I had put in was undone and i got charged another 1/2 hr labour. All up, 1.5 hrs labour, at ?166 UK approx $300.
So, to summarise :
If you have a CD changer, go ahead with a self install - you wont need coding. If you dont
GET THE DEALER TO SUPPLY AND FIT THE INTERFACE.
otherwise, you will spend the same money anyway, and have any work you did outdone in the coding process. IIRC the price for supply and fit in the uk was approx ?400.
a lesson well learned
cheers
