If you are used to a V8 - then take your time and think before you go for the 535i.

You can tune the 535i so it can put up slightly better numbers than the 550i, but a V8 will always be a V8.

Who cares what people see on the badge.... I love the 550 look with CB, but I liked the way the 535 felt lighter and more engaging. The truth is you cannot use all of the power of either car on public roads anyway. If we had the sport package of the 550 on the 535 in the US, i would have gone 535. it is just a more balanced car overall.

1-Sound
2-Preference between a motor with forced induction compared to a naturally aspirated one.

Although both the 535 and 550 are very fast, no matter what you do to mod the TT-I6, its not going to feel like a V8 even though it may be faster.

Before the 535 was introduced I was hell-bent on a 545/550. I took a 535 for an extensive test spin before I decided to buy. Personally, I was convinced after the test drive, that the additional 7k for the V8 wasn't worth it. But I knew I was giving up the two aspects mentioned above (in addition to the looks)

Am I making sense?

You are the one that's gonna be in it....so it honestly depends how YOU feel behind the wheel. Test drive both...either way...not a bad place to be to have to choose between either 535 or 550...

I agree with you on sound, half of a turbo charger is in the exhaust header thus killing any chance of a great exhaust note. As far as feel, thats a personal preference. I also have a Harley Davidson air cooled V-twin that redlines at 5,500 rpm and a Kawasaki ZX-10 in-line water cooled 4 cylinder that redlines at 14,750 rpm, both arguably the most extreme differences in the engine world; and I love them both...

Thanks pennetta,

That would be great. I am in northern NJ, about 2 miles south from GWB. Next weekend I am going to visit my mother in Brooklyn and would gladly drive to LI to check out a real Dinan 535. If you know a safe route with light traffic in your area we can also do a couple of higher speed runs. Not racing, just follow each other on a highway. My 550 is somewhat slow from the start but above 100 mph it comes alive, several days ago I was able to keep up with SRT8 Charger.
If next Sunday afternoon is a good time for you, please PM me the location.

BTW I am going to take a stock 535 with sport auto for a test drive on Wednesday. In theory it should be very close to my 550 with old steptronic.

One more thing to consider with the 550i is the V8 engine noise, a really nice deep growl.

For what it's worth, I called Dinan a few weeks ago and they told me they should be releasing the new engine software for the 2008 550i's soon, they were just waiting on gettting a final test car ready before releasing it.
What they can possible do with a naturally aspired engine? 10-15 hp at best?
