Well, thanks to Chase for supplying the two unwanted trims for the painting trial. The CC trim is no longer usable due to a trial cutout I did for the CIC controller, but I think the left rear door trim is functionally ok, just painted black. So, if anyone needs a replacement LCI left rear door trim let me know and I?ll send it to you.
Now for the process. The two parts were relatively good shape and in bamboo. I sanded each part with 500 grit then applied four coats of black base coat. I let them cure out for about a week or so just because I had other things I was working on. Next, I sanded each part with 600 and 800 and then applied two more coats of black and three coats of urethane high solid clear. I let them cure for two day then wet sanded with 1000, 1200, 2000 and finally 2500. Next step was to polish with 3m clear coast safe compound. I did this by hand and then used a small pneumatic buffer. Last step was to buff in a little swirl remover and final polish. I kinda like it, but I am just not quite sure if I like it against other black panels or not.

Well, we will see. I offered up to another member to do all his trims only for the cost of material and a promise that he take lots of photos so I can see it all together. My console is black and the doors are two toned. I'm thinking it all should be done over the next month.

you are not sure if you like it? A lot of work to do all the pieces for not being sure. I like it and think it is unique and classy. Too late now to go back, unless you wrap it. However, that would be a shame.

You are correct, painting them is nearly permanent but the parts in the pics are only test parts not mine. Mine are still wrapped in DiNoc. I had tossed out the option for someone that perhaps had scratched or just wanted black trims. I have one person that is going to do it. So once they are painted he'll put them back in and take pics. Then I think I'll have a better feel.

one problem is.... they would show a lot of dust. You would see every little spec.

Piano black trim is beautiful. Period.
I have it in my car and I would not change it.
Two things to note however:
1) it does suit a leather of some colour, like grey, red or light brown
2) the bamboo trim also looks exceptionally well and classy IMO, and in this particular combination with natural brown leather, I would have chosen the bamboo trim between the two.
