I am about to purchase a used B&B exhuast from a 2005 545 for my 2006 550. Does anyone know if the 550 uses a different spec exhaust. Will the B&B from the 545 work on my 550? Anyone experience low end torque loss?
Thanks everyone for your help

I am sure that the B&B from a 545 can be "made to fit" a 550, but I don't know if it will be plug and play. When I switched to my B&B I did notice a bit of a loss in acceleration, but when I switched back to my stock muffler I realized how significant it really was. I noticed an immediate improvement in acceleration when I re-installed my stock muffler.......the car had a lot better throttle response too.

Before you install a B&B you should know that they do have a problem with annoying resonant frequency vibrations and noise between approximately 1000 and 2000 RPM. I did not realize how much of driving is spent in that RPM range until I put the B&B on my car. It became too annoying so I had to take it off. It sounded great from outside the car, but too much noise and vibrations within that RPM range inside the car.

I guess B&B now realizes that resonance is not a good thing because now they are making mufflers with what they call "Purge Resonance Technology" (PRT) which according to them "eliminates in-cabin noise". Last time I checked their website it seemed like they were only making the RPT mufflers for Porsches. >>>>>CLICK HERE<<<<<

What about this idea, take the exhaust system from a 645 and try to shoehorn it into a 545? Modify the right muffler (break weld and reweld after fitting) to fit and cut off the dual tips for quads. No loss of torque.
Assuming that this will physically work it would still not be an option for me because the mufflers on the 6 series make it sound too much like an American muscle car V8, and I just hate that sound.

I'm such a dope. I've been reading about the 550i update. Once of the new features is that it will have differentiated exhaust. Doesn't this mean that there will be a left and right mufflers? Why not wait a bit and order the new stock 550i exhaust? Then cut the tips and add the quad tips and viola a quad exhaust without the loss of torque and best of all it's OEM.
I was also thinking that fitting the new sport package 550 muffler on out 545's would be a good idea, because according to BMW it will have a sportier sound yet it will still be OEM so there would be no risk of resonance or other issues. The only thing I worry about is that when they say "sportier sound" I hope that they don't mean like the sound on the 6 series. As I said above I think that sounds too much like the rumble of the American muscle car V8's.

Also, when I read "...sportier sounding differentiated exhaust pipes..." on BMWusa.com I assumed that it was still a dual (one sided) exhaust but that the sound "differntiated it" from regular non-sport package 550's. I am not so sure that by "differentiated" they mean quads. I guess we'll find out soon.

Here are some sound clips that I personally taped of a 545i with Eisenmann Racing Type muffler and two 545's with B&B's:

EISENMANN (RACING TYPE):

B&B on a 545i:
