I am going to ask my dealer tomorrow about this when I pick up my new 525d.
The aux input cable does not have to be mounted in the glove compartment, as far as I can see you can put in anywhere. Since it's a simple cable (just Left, Right and GND signals) I think it's not too hard to extend this cable if you so wish.
With regard to getting power to your iPod, any knowledgable carstereo installer should be able to make that. You would just take a cigarette lighter power adapter for your iPod, take it apart, connect it to a 12V source somewhere behind the dash and lead the cable with the appropriate plug for your iPod to where you will mount the iPod.
This BMW AUX cable is only for getting the sound from e.g. an iPod to the sound system, you cannot control the iPod from the steering wheel like the iPod adapter that is available for older BMW's.
The AUX input has to be software activated by your dealer.

that's exactly it, when available here in Belgium, I will put this device
somewhere not too far from the cigarette lighter and buy a ipod dock
to feed the 12v and let's rock and roll
