Audio volume regulator?

My Ride: 05 530 Titanium Silver/Sexy black
As most of us are aware our E60 without the upgraded sound package (maybe even with the upgrade) isnt exactly loud when we crank it up all the way. If you compare volume from the E46 to the E60 there is a significant difference in volume difference. I dont think it is a voltage/wattage issue but I think there is a voume regulator somewhere in our units.
Anyone done research on this and found ways to eliminate this if there is even a regulator? I think the volume regulator cuts off at a specific point to avoid distortion. The E46 can be cranked to very high volume levels while you can manually adjust bass/treble to avoid distortion.
