Lomag,

My car was built in may 04 and I had BT installed last December. They had to replace the TCU to get it to work, but the TCU that they put in was OLDER than the one that my car had originally.

The dealer said that the TCU that my car had was faulty (manufactured in april 04) and the one that worked for BT was manufatured in March 04.

So there is something about the TCUs that is not just dependent on the install date of the car, or even the manufacture date of the TCU, but maybe even if the TCU is totally performing.

It could be that there are also a lot of them that aren't working right in our cars independent of build date of the car.

I just wanted to add something I learned for those still curious about this whole thing.

Apparently there's acctually 3 different TCU's. There's:

84-11-6-942-592 -- in cars produced from 09/03 - 02/04 (MY 2004)
84-11-6-948-921 -- in cars produced from 03/04 - 08/04 (MY 2004)
84-11-6-955-688 -- in cars produced from 09/04 and on (MY 2005)

I don't know the differences between the last two however there was talk here about needing new wiring to get BT to work. I assume new wiring would be needed for the TCU in MY2005's, perhaps BMW changed things then but I doubt for 04. The middle TCU is the one the MY2004 folks have produced after 03/04 and they got the BT upgrade with only a software update. So I would imagine that middle one is the one we pre-03/04 need assuming no wiring changes were made that affect the TCU.

Now, if you look in the parts system you do see the main wiring harness changed in 03/04 and has a new part number. The main wiring harness goes all over the car so there's no way to know what was acctually changed though.

So I dont know ... just something to throw in the mix here.

My Thursday appt. got bumped up to Monday 'cause I finally got the num. portability working. I'm taking this list of TCU's in to my dealer on Monday and see what they think.

Teaser:
Bluetooth working in my car!....no problem with the new TCU, software upgrade. No wiring harness changed. The darn seat heater recall is taking longer than expected so instead of a one day turn around I have to wait till tomorrow to get my car...details tomorrow!

EXCELLENT news. My build is a 10/03, just like yours, without Logic 7 (should have got it). Time to get a new TCU!

Car returned, BT enabled, all is right with the world.

No additional hardware of any type, simply a VO (vehicle order) for my specific VIN software sent to my dealer, then programmed and paired. Done and done. Phone book paired, called in and out with the iDrive and the voice activation - works very well, sounds good.

There was no changing of connections on the existing wiring harness either - meaning they literally made no physical changes to the car - strickly software. My guy wasn't as informative as I had hoped on the multiple TCU part numbers but was clear on that point.

Hope this helps - I'm going to post a detailed hurrah on the main board for those (like me) who don't come over to this section often.

I got a replacement TCU for my 09/03 530i. the part number on the invoice is 84-10-9-120-760.

Anyone knows if that is an old TCU model or a new one. I can find BT on it.

Thanks

More than 2 years after this post I have run into the same problem:
I have a 09/03 530i and the TCU was changed under warranty due to a static problem in my radio

I finally got a new TCU 2 days ago and I am told that it is a new model BUT it still doesnt have BT! So I asked the SA why that was since I understand that all new TCUs have BT built in. He told me that since my original TCU didnt support BT, this one wouldnt work and the car cant be retro fitted with BT.

I walked away without much conviction!

Finally, thanks to this post, I opened up my trunk cover today to take a look at the TCU. Here is what I found on the TCU

Part # 84-11-9127060
Date: 28/4/07

This means its is a new TCU. It also has the BT sign on it and more details:

SW: 07-03-08
HW: 09-05-01

BT: 00149A74CC82
PK: 0317

ESN: 102-15331269

I also check and there are 4 wires that go into the TCU including a blue one.

I dont really know what these numbers mean but I think that the SA s not levelling with me. My car is supposed to have a updated software that was done to correct the statis issue.

I am trying to figure out how to get BT and if this TCU shows a BT sign on it then what is required to make it work.

Any help is appreciated.
