I'd like to do a couple of small interior mods to my 550i. First, I don't smoke. I've read of a "smokers package" but have seen no evidence of it. If there is such a thing, what do non-smokers get? I'd like to replace the front ashtray with useable storage for coins, breath mints, and other small things. The center console inner storage box is a pain to use and I may replace it with a phone cradle anyways.
Also, my 650i had a cool place for a permanently mounted hidden radar detector down under the ash tray lid. That won't work in the 550i. Any other ideas for its placement? I don't want to go back to a windshield mount.

What kind of radar detector do you have ? The V1 has the a separate concealed display that you can purchase on their website.
But i have seen sellers on Ebay that modify these concealed displays. One seller incorporates the concealed display in the rear view mirror of the car of your choice ( Kinda expensive $600 ) and an other seller makes the concealed display thinner so that it's easier to install in shallow locations ( Maybe something for you to put in the ashtray and is a bit cheaper $90 )
Thin concealed display - http://cgi.ebay.com/Custom-THIN-Valentine-One-1-V1-Radar-Remote-Display_W0QQitemZ230182702933QQihZ013QQcategoryZ14935QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Rear view mirror Concealed display - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VALENTINE-1...sspagenameZWDVW
Hope this helps.
Rich
PS. I'm not associated with the sellers in any way.

the whole point of the concealed display for me is to hide it from the police when being pulled over, keeping others from moochin off it in the night, and keep my driving line of sight on the road, not peeking away to read the display.
The leaves one option, and thats to mount the remote display on the steering column, which has worked great for me in my last 5 or so cars that ive put the V1 into

This is quite funny, as the ash tray and the radar detector both can work off each other, in your case. A bunch of members have put the concealed V1 adapter in the ash tray holder. I'm pretty sure it fits snug in there. I'm not sure if you can close it up, like you would with the normal ash tray, but that would be the ideal set-up to solve both of your issues.
