Hey everyone,

I've just recently cracked a wheel and ruined a tire so I need to get new rears unfortunately. I'm currently running 275/30/19's, but my car sits high in the rear for whatever reason. I was thinking about going up to a 275/35/19 or even 275/40/19. Anyone gone with those sizes? I feel like I have plenty of room in the wheel well to go up in tire size and I also like the idea of having a little taller sidewall for aesthetic reasons as well. I know my speedometer is going to be off if I divert from the standard 275/30/19, but I'm not too worried about that. I obviously don't want any rubbing issues, but if I can get away with going bigger than I would like to based on what you guys think.

Thanks in advance everyone!

AG

I don't think it'll rub if you move up to 40 series profile but I'm no expert. The M5's run 285/40/19's I believe. I don't know if the rear wheel well or suspension set up is any different from the standard 5 series vs. the M5 but since the profile is a % of the overall width and the M5 tires are running taller profiles, I think you'll be fine. I've also noticed that depending on the brand and model of tire, the sidewall profile seem to be different. I just bought and mounted a set of Bridgestones and despite the exact same tire sizes, the rears look narrower and the sidewalls look thinner!

Hello there, i have M166 with 12spacers on the rear with 275/35-19
Last summer it newer rubbed the fenders, I also made an test hove much i could compress the rear without rubbing
The picture showes -50mm or 2" and still my fingers get in between the fender and the wheel.
The M5 have 285/35 -19 not 285/40 and no spacers, The M5 have also a diffrent in the fenders,
I have looked close and you can not see anything from the side but if you look from below and up at the fender.
On the std E60 the thicknes on the fender is app, 1/2" with the bends and the plastic, on the M5 its bended streight up sp with the plastic its only
maby 1/4" or even 1/8". So loots of space!
But what a heek it seams to work well om my E60,
HAve a good one

Thanks for the responses guys.

I feel pretty good about it not rubbing after doing some more research and viewing your responses. However, I'm reading that most places say that you should stay within 3% of the original ratio, because of the possibility of 'brake failure'? Should I be concerned with this? By increasing tire size am I putting extra stress on everything? Thanks for any help again!

I may be wrong, but I would think by increasing the profile of the tire you would raise the height of the car.

I stand corrected on the M5's rear tire size.

As for increase stress on components by going with a larger tire..... yes it'll put a little more stress on the suspension components but it's minimal (to none) with the tire sizes you're speaking of. I've never heard of brake failure due though maybe premature wear on bushings but that's when you go with heavy 21" wheels.

I run 285/35-19 on OEM 166s with zero rubbing. Sport package also. Fronts are 245/40-19 and they definitely rub- too large a diameter so will drop down to 245/35 next time.

How bad do they rub? Is it constant or just when making sharp turns? My 166s are coming in this week...
