In the search for the perfect tire combo to fit 166 or 167 rims I came up with this idea. I was looking at the pics of the new M3 sedan and that is the tire size specified. Interesting thing is that they are only .2" less width but about 1/2" taller than the usual 275/30/19's most use. I think most of us consider the 275/30's to look a little too thin in the sidewall (not quite meaty enough) for our cars and 285/30's are expensive and somewhat hard to find. I would like to know if the 265/35's will work on ET17 166's or 167's, has anyone tried it?

They should work but cost wise they are very similar to the 285's so the point is moot. Checking tire rack the prices would be ~$20 more for the 285's in equal brand/type tires. Actually the cheapest 285 is a few dollars less then the cheapest 285. The 275's are still the best choice if cost is a concern. The difference in sidewall between the 275 and 285 is ~2.5mm which is hardly noticeable. The 275's look good on the car just choose a rim that is not too wide as that will stretch the tire (no matter what size you go with).

For PS2's I get the 275/30's and 265/35's at the same price and the 285/30's at $100 more. Since 265/35/19 is becoming the new M3 standard I bet there will be a good selection unlike the 285's. When I get my 166's I'll ask the dealer to mount both sizes and see how they look, going to have to go 245/35 up front.

PS2's are not the only tire out there. The Ponteza's are just as good and cost the same for the sizes you are looking at.

265/35R19 275/30R19 285/30R19
~Width 10.4" 10.8" 11.2"
~Diameter 26.3" 25.7" 25.5"

The 265 vs 275 will be the tallest by .6" and narrowest by ~.4"
The 285 vs 275 sidewall is only .1" per side. That is nothing. I think you are over analyzing and making something out of nothing.
