There is VAG COM available for VAG group cars for about ?200 which is absolutely great, but for BMW's I can only see that carsoft (which appears to be over priced and a bit cack) and autologic (horrendously expensive) are available.
Has anyone got any of these products or anything similar they could recommend?

autologic is very expensive (40,000 ?) for the equptment and support, but dont forget it includes live (real time) programing by BMW trained software writers
i had my cars software written for my car in 3 hours (dedicated)
i consider those options cheap for that level of service.

?40,000 cheap for a tablet PC and diagnostic software?!
Why is it then that ross tech can produce software that is better than what Audi uses for ?200 and the BMW equivalent is 200 times more expensive

because i would hazard a guess at the company your refering to have "cloned" or such like audi's software or similar...it costs millions to produce software to these standards capabilitys through research and development
?200 ?? you get what you pay for.
when the guys were setting up my car they had over 8 hours live programing specific to me free of charge, its that back up 24/7 that costs money, try that with ?200 of ross tech kit
try buying the snap on OBD2 diagnostic hand held... that will open your eyes.
and you cant compare audi with an E60...there is a hell of a lot more computing power and systems in the E60 than most other cars on the planet.

Seems to me Uwe Ross was working on a BIM-com or some such product for BMWs; I wonder what happened to that? I'm looking to get an E60 next summer, some sort of diagnostic system will be a must.

As you know Bim-com from ross-tech was never finished, but another developer prepares very similar tool. Maybe it could be interesting.. you can check it: BimCOM: BMW/Mini professional diagnostic scantool
