I've had one software update in 18 months and I pushed for it. Wouldn't have done it if I had a remap. The software upgrade talk is definitely overblown.
FWIW - I am visiting my dealer for the first time in 10 months and 15,000 miles - yep - I need an oil change and nothing more....

you have to remember that most of the engines that are produced and sold have to meet
certain criteria, for emissions and so on... no german brand really pushes their engines, and
as such it is very much possible that you can get reasonable gains from chipping... Take MB
for example, using the same engine (3.2 litre part back in the day) with no modifications whatsoever,
they increased the hp of the engine twice... It really has to do with the competition, if audi is doing
334bhp from their engine, and mercedes (before) has 306bhp, then should you really push the capabilities of the engine? NO... when the competition cathces up, bmw revises their engines, increases the hp without doing much in the way of engine internals

As I did point out, take out emissions considerations and there are some gains to be made (possibly).
Now with regards to MB and their 3.2... Can you point out where/when it got more hp without any changes? I don't remember that (not saying it is not possible, just very rare for a mfg to increase hp without doing anything to the engine).
BTW, just for snicks, I asked Larry Prebis what he thought about this... his response
"You are correct.... a retune of a stock ECU on a stock motor almost always yields minimal gains.... If it didn't, BMW tuners are doing something wrong!"

Personally, I am always skeptical about claims that a remap will bring significant horsepower gains to a normally aspirated engine. I looked into this with my previous car - a 2002 E39 530. Dinan, who many believe to be the preemient BMW tuner, says this about the 530 engine:
"The new 3 liter Engine Management Systems are fine examples of BMW's sophisticated engineering. BMW detonation control systems, high speed engine management computers and sophisticated "adaptations" have left no horsepower for we tuners to extract; as much as we hate to admit it!"
http://www.dinancars.com/Series.asp?Series...ne%20Tuning#418
Even with a remap, intake and exhasut, Dinan could only get 14hp / 13 lb/ft of torque from the 530.
I would have to belive that the 545/550 engines and software are just as sophisticated as the previous generation 530. Regardless of how reputable the company, I would not pay for a remap unless and until i saw hard data demonstrating the benefit as applied to a US based normally aspirated engine.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
I can't decide whether this sounds more like an advertisement or a warranty-buster? Or maybe just plain fraud.
Map this....
Good luck guys,
Ray Hull

edit: you also mentioned BMW was guilty of this as well - any links?
Personally, here in the US, I have never seen any car change HP without engine mods or new testing procedures.

same displacement, crap website i cant find another site that has the torque curves hence i posted this one
s320cdi
145 kW / 197 hp 470 Nm from 1800 rpm . 2000 model year (launched june 1999)
150 kW / 204 hp 500 Nm from 1800 rpm . 2002 model year
here is the new engine with new internals in 2006

For bmw , i might be mistaken. I was going to post links to the 184 and 204 BHP 3.0litre diesel engines that they offered in the e46, but it appears to be different. One site claims 2996cm3 for both, the other states 2979 and 2996

Yea, I'm surprised how hard it is to find info on the older model years for the European cars. Here in the US we have tons of that data just sitting around (of course I still have all my C&D and R&T mags). Makes it even hard to argue this darn point
130i: 265ps
330i/530i: 258ps
same engine
