im trying to add a little boost to my 545i, but nothing major, wondering if i can add the air filter? will its eat more gas or whats the downside?

Assuming you have a US model there is an additional charcoal filter in your airbox that can be removed to improve airflow a little. I did it on my 2005 545 and there did seem to be some improvement (mainly throttle response). There were a number of threads on the forum a year or two ago that discussed the removal. This additional filter wasn't on EU models, it was apparently on US cars for emissions purposes. The charcoal filter was also present on my 2007 550 (but designed differently and more difficult to remove) but on the 2005 it was a very easy process. Not sure if the LCI models have the filter.

I had the AFe Cold Air Intake installed on my car (2006 550i) last year. There is a slight increase in engine noise but aside from that there is no down side. The fit is beautiful and coupled with the performance software the difference in power is noticeable.

air filter certainly wont hurt. be sure to also remove the charcoal filter if you have it.
