Add expensive AUX port or go FM transmitter?
#1
Hello to all.
I've been on here for some time as a huge fan of the E60 but as an E90 driver. I'm finally trading the E90 for one this coming Friday. It's only a UK 55 plate 520d SE (looking to save some cash on fuel) but I figured it'd do the job nicely for a couple of years until I can get my hands on a new F10. Anyway, I've been running my Creative MP3 player through my AUX port in my E90 but find that the 5 series doesn't have an AUX port - dealer reckons they became standard fit 06 though I'm inclined to think it was more to do with options specified new at this age. Apparently, the official fitting of an AUX port by the dealer would set me back ?268. He reckons he can get one fitted by a third party for about ?150. That's clearly still a lot to spend but I don't want to be without the player. Has anyone got an opinion on the use of an FM transmitter, that I could buy in the UK, which is sufficiently comparable in quality to using the AUX port connection? All advice gratefully received.

Over here the FM transmitters don't work worth a darn (in my opinion) around the major metro areas... you're always fiddling with the frequency for device-transmission to find "unused" terrestrial transmission frequencies. Even having found one, the quality is mediocre at best.

FM transmitters can't compare to the quality of an aux input. I had a transmitter and it kept dropping the signal and the sound quality was poor at best.
They aux inputs DID become standard in 06. My advice - get one fitted.

If you have the CDC in the car, then another AUX option is to buy the Dension Gateway. That requires no dealer programming and beside AUX it will give you an iPOD and USB connection too.

I have an 05 545 with NO Nav, but have a CDC. My in dash currently does not play mp3s, will the Dension work for me, and how much does it cost?
