Hi All,

The delivery date of my 550i (Carbon Black with sports package) is only about 2 weeks away and I am thinking about making some minor modifications/tweaks.

One thing I am deliberating, is a subtle exhaust change. I do like the stock sound, but feel it is a touch tame and would prefer something with a slightly more aggressive sound.

I have seen some posts about going with the "M5 style" 4 exhausts but I think that would be a little too involved and complicated.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Honestly I would spend the money on something else. I love the standard exhaust and changing it to anything other than a quad setup would really be a waste of money.

A simple muffler change will accomodate the sound issue, aesthetically if you like the qaud look thats a lot more $$ but it can be done relatively inexpensively, search the site for all the optional set ups

Cheers

Slightly off topic, I have a 545i and really like the sound of the 645/650 - how does the 550 sound compared to the 6? I have a friend who's a BMW specialist mech and he recomended the Remus Rear Mufflers at the back - however i have to admit to perferring the factory spec where ever possible - any thoughts?

Has someone tried the stock 550 muffers on a 545?

thanks

i don't think so. the '08 550 sport exhaust still sounds tamer than aftermarket exhausts.

remus, supersprint, eisenmann, b&b, rdsport, borla, magnaflow, dinan, etc.
my recommendation is a single sided dual tipped b&b exhaust. no need to get quad setup

Not if you have it custom done like I did. Cost me about $150 for the straight pipe. I have yet to put on dual tips, the factory piping's diameter is too large for any normal fitment so I have to get custom dual tips welded on. The sound is amazing, loud and deep in the low/mid range and as quiet as stock on the freeways with no droning. Power gains are very noticable since both mufflers have been removed, gaining a good amount of mid and especially top end pulls.

Thanks! I think I may stop by the Eisenhaus - Eisenmann shop as they are pretty close to Chicago.

I am assuming the answer is no, but just to be sure; the exhaust modification does not have any effect on the factory warranty, correct?

Dinan's free flow exhaust would be a nice option.

Dinan's Free Flow Exhaust for 550i models provides improved flow over the stock system without the excessive noise and "boominess" associated with typical after-market mufflers. The system is manufactured using 100% 20 gauge-304 stainless steel for optimum resistance to corrosion. In addition, the muffler is lighter than the stock unit. Internally, the systems feature Dinan's Tuned Resonance Chamber Technology, providing the optimum balance between maximum power gains and a civilized, yet sporty exhaust note. Dual 3-inch diameter polished stainless tips give the cars a tasteful performance look as well.

Dinan will be no louder than the new 550s sport exhaust sounds and conisdering he isdoing it for sound alone he would be disapointed. Not to mention they are by far the most expensive.

Honestly the answer is easy for you-I can tell by your post you do not want anything crazy loud sounding but rather just some extra deepness sound to an already nice sounded exhaust-and that simple answer is getting a Remus muffler/exhaust. They are relatively cheaper-you can get the sport sound for 600 or so. It is a muffler basically and doesnt have to completely replace the rest of your exhaust and it simply gives you a throatier, deeper sound that still maintains the nice bmw sound.

The other brands mentioned will be too loud from what I can tell from you post-Plenty of sound clips on youtube-not sure about the 550 specifically but a remus on any current bmw sounds pretty similar. I have one on a 530 and love it.
