I'm not the engineer that designed the AFE CAI so I don't have the technical details. All I know is that ever since I've installed the AFE CAI my car hasn't been heat soaked from the engine bay. I've been in many stop and go traffic situations and the engine hasn't gone into limp mode or seized. The AFE CAI draw air from the same location as the stock CAI. I know you're pessimistic about the design of the AFE but I've haven't heard anybody having heat soak problems with the open design of the AFE.

Is ther a noticable difference in the intake noise level. I have had a CAI on a few cars and some became much louder and others did not seem to really change.

I would like to know as well. I would preferably like to hear the AFE when I press/release the throttle instead of having a quiet intake.

I know that my RDSport exahaust is the same as VT w/ remaining 2 resonators and it 'seems' to be louder than VT RDSport exhaust w/ all resonators removed. I'm thinking that my Dinan CAI did increase the intake noise level.

What freed0m forgot to mention is that it's louder in a BAD way. There's some droning going on.

I can guarantee you that anyone that gets the AFE CAI will love the sound!

BAD? Nah, not to me bro The deep throaty exhaust note sounds quite good and no unnecessary removal of resonators are needed Take a look at AFE and Dinan CAI right side by side... You'll find that Dinan is much better in design and quality

I'm no baller, just saying it like it is... you where there at SonicMS and your jaw dropped when you saw my Dinan CAI w/ nice carbon fiber setup.

Thats enough ladies.

I know the AFE intake is designed so that when the hood is shut, it creates a seal around the intake element to reduce heat soak from the engine. And Joe, heat soak does not necessarily mean engine shut down, most likely, it'll just not make as much power or even decrease factory power. There has been debate on this with regards to the new K&N Typhoon intake for the M5 as well since it's also open but some believe that once the car moves, colder air will overcome any hot air that was there when the car was sitting idling. A logical assumption but I'm not an engineer either so I don't know if that's really true.

The Dinan intake on the other hand is an enclosed airbox with 2 intake tubing. The factory box only has 1. The second tubing is routed to the front near the kidney grill to get colder air. The Dinan system shouldn't have any heat soak issues. It does come with a higher cost however so it's really up to the buyer to decide.

Personally I think the choice is pretty simple. You have a 545, get the Dinan since AFE doesn't really make one for the 545. And if you have a 550, get the AFE since Dinan doesn't make one for the 550. hahaha
