#1
does any one see a problem that i might run into if i'd like to make an 550i look exactly like a stock M5?
insurance on an m5 in NYC for me is 24000 per year, hence the attempt
here is what i've priced out.
2 mirrors
front and rear bumper
2 front fenders
2 side sills
4 19'' wheels
2 m5 mufflers
instrument cluster
shift knob
i drive controller
mats
m5 door sills
aluminum trim
steering wheel
all purchased from a bmw dealer

Why do you want the M5 - Looks, Status or Power????
Looks: A 550 with the M kit and 166 rims will give basically the same look to the untrained eye.
Status: most people don't know the difference and if they do, they would figure out you just tried to copy it.
Power: Obviously not, as you did not mention it. If you do a super charger or RDS kit, you can achieve the power, but then you are almost at the cost of an M5.
On your list of mods, the M5 exhaust would be expense as the spare tire is in the way. If you add up all the mods, when all is said and done you start approaching the cost of an M5 and still have a 550.
If insurance is 24k/year on an M5, you need to find a new insurance agent or get a better driving record. What is the cost of a 550?

My Ride: '05 545i - scheduled for ED pickup in Munich on 7/22!
If its not, either you're really young, have a bad history, or need a new issurance company. I've heard ppl in their late 20's who have a 360 Modena or a 996TT in NYC are paying $2k a year for insurance.

doesn't worth all the trouble imo. U close too much to the m5 price.
If u want to mod it, do subtle things and with good taste not copy in that manner an m5. Might aswell get an m5 badge on the boot if u're at it.

Don't do it
Surely it would be better to spec Alpina style or one of the other "official" design houses? Do you really want to have to explain everytime someone asks ......"well no, it's actually only a 550!" (not that a 550 can be described as "only"!) when the alternative would be to mention the car on its' merits
