Hello, I have a 06 550I and i was wondering if anyone else has had Dinan work down? Is it worth all the extra money to add maybe 20 HP? I had a Stage 2 Dinan 540 and that was such a fun car. Any suggestions?

I drove freed0m's Dinanized 545i (ECU mapping, CAI, throttle body, RDSport Exhaust), and the feel of power is just like my 550i => That's 35hp increased
Now your decision to make worth it or not
If I were you, I'd do it in a heart beat. Better bang for the buck than trading in.

Is that dyno proven 35 horses or just the "feeling" of 35 horses?

run a search for peoples experiences. Only you can decide if 20hp is work x $. Also, are you missing out on something because you dont have 20 more hp? In the grand scheme of things, 20 more hp is not a big difference. It is fun to mod cars though

Hi mlarson,

I have a Sept. build 07 550i steptronic with the dinan exhaust and stage 1 software w/ K&N air filter. I must say that I am very happy with the software in particular. The exhaust adds almost no detectable performance gain. In fact, it seemingly moves peak torque a little higher up the rev range, which in traffic translates to a feeling of less power (this is a very small difference here though). The software restores that small loss by making the gas pedal more sensitive. Like active steering for the gas pedal. If I push down on the throttle more than 25% in 1st gear, I'll trigger the traction light (and my car has non runflat 285 michelin pilot sport 2s on the rear -way more bite than the OEM runflats). The software may not give you much additional power at all, but it noticiably improves the response and feel of the power band. In connection with the BMW upgrades to the car's software, my car is 100% better to drive than when it was new.

Good luck,
DRP

Almost everyone on this Forum that has installed Dinan bits has been thrilled with the enhancements. Like you, I once had a Dinan 5 series ... and that car was a blast. So I've thought about installing a full Dinan treatment on my 2006 550i too.

But think about this ... you can spend $7,500 on Dinan stuff and gain maybe 35HP and improved handling, or you can spend about $20,000 and trade in for a 2006 M5 and gain 140HP plus world-class handling.

More importantly, you will get very little return on your $7,500 Dinan investment when you sell the 550. The M5 on the other hand, will likely hold a $15,000 to $20,000 premium over the 550i for several years, so you will get almost all of your investment in the M5 back.

So it seems to me that the better investment - financially and emotionally - is to get an M5 instead of enhancing the 550.
