mike did you swap the chip if so post up the pm i sent with the pics so other members can do the same I am assuming that the chips in the uk and the usa are the same it worked for me.... once you have stripped the clocks this is the chip you need to solder onto your m5 cloocks from your standard clocks (See [pic)
to take the clocks out do the following:-
remove the torx that hold the clocks into place on the car
unplug the loom
undo the 4 torx on the back of the unit and remove the facia
carefully remove the needles by using a trim tool to lever them up very gently dont be rough imagine there a virgin girl lol
now flip the clocks over, look carefully on the back where the caloom plugs into the clock your see a small clip use a flat blade and release the clip the clocks and board can now be removed
unclip the 2 ribbions on either side.
lay the clocks downn facing you (upwards) and on the left hand side your see a chip this stores the cars vin millage etc etc take this off and solder it onto your m5 clocks, pls pls note the way the chip goes.
once done put the clocks togeter, now be very very careful when putting the neddles back on to not put to much pressure on them otherwise your break the units they sit in, the little units have springs in them which privide tension to the needles to much pressure pushes the spring out of its sockets and then you have broken it, your need to then solder a new unit into pakce from your original clocks.
below is a pic of the chip you need to change its onthe left hand side (clcoks facing upwards)

your need to get the oil temp coded to work everything else wil be ok. I must stress this worked on my UK car so i assume it will be ok for other cars
the chips you need to change is highlighted in red

Wow, it was true the story of the chip swap!
Kail, with this method is still necessary install the old cluster for programming?
Or the M5 cluster become an E60 cluster?
Thanks!

i'm doing one next week have found the chip in the 545 cluster that holds the data that can either be soldered into the new board or we will try doing it through using autologic, i'll keep you posted on this. I know andy545 had his done so he maybe able to shed some more light on this
have you checked the needle calibration ? I hope it works for you but the "chip swapping" method has been tested last summer by DocHorror in his 645i. It unfortunately did not work successfully with regards to that the speed and tacho needles were operating in the same way as the stock cluster. As you know the graduation between the stock and M5 cluster is different, especially after the 120km/h mark. DocHorror would be travelling say 200 on the M5 cluster but in fact would only be actually travelling 180. In the extreme he would be travelling 250km/h (actual) but the M5 cluster would show 280 ! So, while the chip you indicated is the correct one and swapping it does make the car think it's stock ( correct VIN, mileage etc.), the calibration of the needles is incorrect.
Also, the oil temp worked on my car from day 1 even without coding - it's operation on the M5 cluster is generally available on auto E60's.
Hopefully DocHorror will chip in some more info.

Andy has the most perfect job done on his M5 cluster. I've seen it in person and drove his car. All functions are working correctly, also he is able to reprogramm his car without to have to swap clusters.
The tech guy took some parts of the code of the stock chip and fitted them to the M5 cluster chip.
Is that correct Andy?

Actually DocHorror and I were in Antwerp yesterday to visit an electronics specialist - he was able to read the calibration data from the M5 cluster and we concluded that there are about 7 codes, one of them has the correct calibration data for the 645i (it could be different for the E60). It's a matter of trial and error now to test and try which is the correct code.
