Hi I'm Maylander's dad.

He joined the forum when I placed the order for my car in October 04, which was delivered in late December 2004.
I often search this forum but have never contributed or asked any questions.
I have recently replaced the front pads with Green stuff - very little dust!

So my 530d is just over 4 years old. It is due for its third oil change, I believe this includes air filter and fuel filter. BMW want ?440 Air filter, fuel filter (both Hengst) and oil filter (Bosch) have been sourced from Euro Car Parts at a cost of just under ?55.
Oil - Castrol turbo diesel 0W - 30 (LL04) about ?76 for 8 litres from my local Motorworld (Halfords would not give any discount on 12 litres @ ?45 / 4l).
Last oil service my BMW supplier had no idea that my 04 car with particle filter should have LL04 rather than LL01. (I have little faith in the majority of garages and always think that although work will take me several times longer than a BMW mechanic I feel that I will do a proper job).

I have purchased from ebay a BMW manual(CD - not the friendliest of manuals). The Bosch oil filter (cylindrical about 15cm long and 6cm diameter) only comes with 1 O ring for the cap. The BMW manual and the pictures shown on this site show that 3 O rings are required - they fit on a conical stem in the filter cap. Are there different designs?

Do I need any special information on fuel filter and air filter changes?

Does my engine come with modified intake flaps?

Is there anything else i should be replacing?

Looking forward to repiles!

Hi Dad!

My car is a mid-04 530d and has (or should I say had!) the 4.5mm shafted swirl flaps, so your late '04 should have them too.
There seems to be evidence that the larger shafts are as prone to dropping the flaps as the earlier ones. Either way, its peace of mind to know that they aren't there any more. I have noticed no difference in performance at all, I am getting slightly better fuel consumption, but I think that this is a coincidence with the weather getting warmer.

To get the air filter off, you need to remove the microfilters anyway, so you might as well change them if they are anywhere near due, although it is only a 5 minute job to swop them anyway. Perhaps a crankcase breather filter as you're going to get the top cover off the engine, it's only an extra couple of minutes job. There is now a later type fitted - it has been mentioned on this forum a number of times.

Thanks Mike,

Replaced the microfilters a couple of months ago (BMW ?60 the pair), will get a crankcase breather. Have you changed your oil filter? Any info?

So true. I took my car in for an unscheduled oil change and they never even did the job but charged me for it. Thankfully I took my own oil which was still untouched in the boot. They eventually did it for free but it meant another trip there.

I bought Mobil1 ESP for 33quid (4ltr pack). That could cut down your bill further. Not much but every little helps.

cheers

For what it's worth, I bought a dealer oil filter recently for my late 04 530D, (Pt.# 11427788460), and it came with one rubber O-ring, about 75mm. dia., and one copper washer approx. 17mm. in dia.
I bought a sump plug washer separately, and it's exactly the same size as the copper one mentioned above, so whether or not the copper washer included in the filter pack is required for the oil filter change, or is meant to replace the sump plug washer, I don't really know, as I still haven't changed the oil/filter.

John (dad of Maylander739)

John,

Not done my filter as I'm still using $tealers for my car (I change the oil myself "half way" but not the filter) as I want to preserve the Stamps in the Book - and I don't do many miles in it these days, so I can cope with a $tealer oil change every couple of years!!

Motorworld were late getting the oil in - arrived today instead of last Wednesday - their price for the inconvenience is now ?32 per 4L. Much better that Halfords ?45
